End of the Year Measurements

Every year, all students in the Lower School do a whole book of measurements about themselves in science class.  I hold on to them until the students are in 5th grade and they are moving on to Middle School.  The students love seeing how they've grown and changed over the years!

Geocaching with 3rd Grade

The 3rd Grade has hidden 3 geocaches over at the Abington Art Center.  We've already had several geocachers find them as soon as they were posted on geocaching.com! The 3 geocaches highlight different areas/sculptures at the Center and were totally created by the 3rd grade.  If you have a GPS stop over to the Center to find the hidden treasure.  This project was made possible through a grant from the AFS Lynn Mass Creative Teacher Fund.  LS Science now has a classroom set of GPSs and compasses!

Egg Experiment

One of the great experiments in Kindergarten chemistry is making a rubber egg.  For this you need vinegar and an egg.  To make it a bit more interesting I have the students draw on the egg with permanent marker first. Vinegar is an acid called acetic acid - CH3COOH - and white vinegar from the grocery store is usually about 5% acetic acid and 95% water. Egg shells are made up of calcium carbonate. The vinegar reacts with the calcium carbonate by breaking the chemical into its calcium and carbonate parts (in simplest terms). The shell dissolves and the membrane is left behind.  If you're careful you can get a lot of bounces out of it!!

Planting for the National Wildlife Federation Gardens

Last week, in a joint art and science project, the Prekindergarten planted seeds in containers in the greenhouse for the science room gardens. They also made beautiful garden pictures to give everyone a glimpse of what our gardens will hopefully look like in a few weeks!
